Newly formed Delle Venezie DOC showcases Pinot Grigio at LWF

The newly formed Delle Venezie DOC is working to raise the profile of Pinot Grigio, showcasing the best of its wines in partnership with Wine List Confidential at the London Wine Fair, having raised the grape from IGP to DOC status last year.

Created in 2017, the DOC covers the Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto regions, and permits the use of Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Verduzzo.

In line with EU standards, Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie DOC wines will be required to be at least 85% Pinot Grigio, while the remainder may be any white grape allowed to be grown in the region.

All wines undergo taste tests by an independent panel and are subject to a maximum yield of 126hl/ha.

Meanwhile, sparkling Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie DOC must be tank-fermented, and must contain less than 32g/L of residual sugar.

The Consorzio Tutela Vini DOC delle Venezie is currently showcasing the best Pinot Grigio from this newly formed DOC at the London Wine Fair, in association with Wine List Confidential.

Yesterday, the president of the Consorzio, Albino Armani, presented a selection of the newly certified wines at the London Wine Fair, including 18 that had won a medal in this year’s Drinks Business Pinot Grigio Global Masters 2018, alongside the drinks business editor-in-chief Patrick Schmitt MW.

“Commercially, Pinot Grigio is extremely important for the UK market,” said Schmitt, stressing the significance of this new DOC.

“It represents around 202 million bottles so it’s an enormous area of Italy. In the UK market almost 10% of Italian wine sold is a bottle of Pinot Grigio. What this new DOC is doing is protecting the image of Italian Pinot Grigio and providing a guarantee of quality,” concluding: “These wines represent a more finely tuned version of Pinot Grigio from the north of Italy.”

Over three days, 60 wines from the Delle Venezie DOC will be available to taste at the Wine List Confidential stand at the London Wine Fair (F45).
