LA trade to taste the world’s greatest Grenaches

The Los Angeles wine trade is invited to taste the world’s greatest Grenaches on Thursday this week as part of a US roadshow focused on Grenache, in partnership with Yangarra Estate.

The Grenache masterclass will take place in LA’s Redbird restaurant at 10.30am on 22 February, and follows a similar event in New York last week, which highlighted the influence of soil type, vine age and winemaking techniques on the finest wines made from this single grape.

The educational tasting, which took place at the New York branch of the International Culinary Center on Tuesday last week, was devised to draw attention to the fine wine capabilities of Grenache, while also shining a light on the brilliance of this variety when grown in the soils of Australia’s McLaren Vale – and particularly at Yangarra Estate.

By comparing the most sought-after Grenaches from around the world, attendees were able to see for themselves the characters of this grape when its grown in certain parts of the world, which, aside from the McLaren Vale, included an icon example from the Barossa, and, outside Australia, top end Grenaches from France’s Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, Spain’s Montsant and a cult wine from California’s Santa Barbara county.

In particular, the masterclass looked at the impact of soil type on wine style, as well as the affect of vine age, with Grenaches hailing from vineyards planted less than 20 years ago to those that were over a century old.

The event also considered in detail the influence of the producer, both in the vineyard and the cellar.

Among the topics discussed were the affects of biodynamic farming on Grenache, as well as different fermentation and ageing vessels, from concrete to large wooden vats and smaller barriques.

The masterclass was hosted by Peter Fraser, who is head winemaker at Yangarra Estate and Australian Winemaker of the Year in 2016, a title awarded to him by James Halliday, primarily due to Fraser’s amazing results with old-vine Grenache.

The New York event will be repeated in Los Angeles at Redbird Restaurant on Thursday 22 February, from 10.30 to 12.00, and is free to members of the wine trade.
