Bar offers free drinks for over-80s after ageism complaint

After being accused of ageism, Filthy’s bar in Newcastle responded by offering free drinks for the over-80s, and has since received bus trip booking queries from local care homes.

Despite the phone calls, however, Filthy’s Bar told Chronicle Live that they were yet to receive any OAPs as customers.

“We were being accused of ‘ageism’ by a rather grumpy follower on Facebook,” the bar explained.

“So we decided to do an offer for those of us who are a little older at the weekend. Unfortunately we haven’t had any over-80s customers taking advantage of this great offer just yet, but we have had a few phone calls from local homes enquiring on booking bus trips in!”

The lack of uptake may have something to do with the fact that the offer only applies between the hours of 1am and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Filthy’s are enforcing a strict door and entry policy with party-loving pensioners required to bring ID to the bar.

“We won’t be letting any 79-year-olds slip through the net,” the bar confirmed in a Facebook comment.

Filthy’s actions have been praised on social media, with one Facebook user commenting: “Nan, get ya coat, I’ll have a backa on ya mobility scooter!”

The bar, located in the historic Bigg Market, is popular with local students, who through a Facebook competition, currently have the chance to win a skydiving trip for two, £100 in cash, a Filthy’s hoody and a table for 10 with a bottle of the house spirits.
