Nederburg calls for support for charity Qhubeka

Nederburg, premium wine partner of Tour de France cycling squad Dimension Data, are asking for support as the team’s cyclists pedal in aid of the charity Qhubeka.

Taking part in the 104th Tour de France which began on 1 July in Dusseldorf, Dimension Data includes professional pedallers Edvald Boasson Hagen (Norway), Mark Renshaw (Australia), Steve Cummings (Great Britain) and Mark Cavendish (Great Britain), who has unfortunately had to pull out after a crash left him with a broken shoulder.

Dimension Data, often known as ‘Africa’s team’, raise money and awareness for the charity Qhubeka. The South African non-profit organisation gives bicycles to needy South Africans in exchange for work done to improve the environment, community or academic results.

Qhubeka is the Nguni word for ‘to progress’ or ‘to move forward.’ Since 2005, the charity has given out over 70,000 bicycles to those in need.

Robyn Bradshaw, Nederburg’s global brand development manager, said: “Nederburg is actively supporting this great cause, not only via its partnership with the Team Dimension Data cycling team, but also by housing Qhubeka’s first bicycle assembly facility in the Western Cape at our brand home in Paarl, and funding some 200 bicycles for distribution in Cape Winelands communities and beyond during the course of 2017.”

“Just recently, three neighbourhood watch organisations overseeing safety in the Paarl East area were given the first 50 bicycles built at Qhubeka’s bicycle assembly plant at Nederburg.   They are now better equipped to fight crime in their communities. Up until now, patrols were done on foot. Bicycles allow neighbourhood watch members to cover more ground quicker, increasing their effectiveness”.
