Hong Kong’s drinks trade has had a busy couple of weeks, from educational masterclasses to swanky wine dinners and winemaker visits. The CEO of Moët Hennessy Estates & Wines was in town for a masterclass and steakhouse Gaucho rolled out a special pairing menu for April and May in honour of Malbec World Day. To celebrate Malbec World Day on April 17, Argentine steakhouse Gaucho Hong Kong has rolled out a new and exclusive steak and wine pairing menu for April & May. The three-course wine-matched dinner is on offer every Thursday evening from 6pm. A selection of Argentina’s Malbecs are featured on the menu including Achaval-Ferrer Lujan de Cuyo Mendoza Malbec 2014, Selection G Familia Zuccardi Santa Rosa Mendoza G 2013, Benegas Dos Alturas Lujan de Cuyo Mendoza Malbec 2014 and a sweet wine from Malamado Familia Zuccardi NV Fortificado Malbec Dulce. Jean-Guillaume Prats, CEO of Moët Hennessy Estates & Wines, gave a masterclass last Wednesday in Hong Kong at Mandarin Oriental Hotel about three of the company’s estate wines – Cloudy Bay, Newton Vineyard from Napa Valley and Ao Yun from China’s Yunnan province. During the masterclass, the vintner revealed that its wine production at Cloudy Bay’s Marlborough vineyards suffered significant production loss during 2017 vintage due to heavy rainfall and floods. “It’s gonna be a tiny production in Marlborough this year because of the heavy rains. Everything harvested before the rainfall will be delicious, everything harvested from now on, will be diluted,” Prats stated. “We have made the decision to reduce production of Cloudy Bay significantly for the 2017 vintage to make sure we keep the quality and standard that we maintain,” he continued.

Michael Jordan MS, director of Jackson Family Wines’ global key accounts, presented a masterclass on American Pinot Noirs, comparing four Pinots from Jackson Family Wines’ estates in California with four Pinots from north Oregon. The Master Sommelier concluded that Oregon Pinots are likely to be fresher than their often “jammier” Californian counterparts, and in terms of acidity, Oregon Pinots tend to be more acidic compared with Californian examples. In regard to Burgundy, Oregon reds are, in general, more intensely fruity.

Mounir Saouma of Beaune-based négociant Lucien Le Moine was in Hong Kong to conduct a vertical tasting of his 2013 vintage. The controversial winemaker argued strongly against filtering and fining wines, and stressed the importance of texture and aftertaste in wines.
