Denbies lands in US ahead of Thanksgiving

England’s largest single wine estate Denbies is sending its first significant shipment of wine to the US, ahead of Thanksgiving this week.

The Dorking-based producer is working with online flash sale retailer WTSO (“Wines ’til sold out”) on a wine promotion for its Denbies Whitedowns wine, a blend of Seyval Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, which will retail in the US at $24.99, including delivery. It marks the first significant shipment to the US for Denbies, which has only exported very small quantities of its wines to the US before, including 120 bottles of the Cubitt Reserve in 2013.

The US wine site offers deals on wines one-at-a time, beginning at midnight each day.

CEO of Denbies Wine Estate Chris White said the winery was very excited to be sending its first shipment of any size to the US market. “We are seeing a growing interest in quality English wines from export markets and are currently in negotiations to ship more of Denbies’ still and sparkling wines overseas. This is a very positive development for Denbies and the English wine category as a whole,” he said.

WTSO’s consultant Robert Denby welcomed the shipment as a ‘watershed moment”, saying he was confident the US market was ready for English sparkling wines.

“England now offers the required quality, value and customer care to appeal to the US market. In addition, the recent fall in the pound makes imports increasingly attractive for retailers,” he said.

Earlier this year, the wine estate has upped production of its English sparkling wine from 10% to 40% to keep up with rising demand.

In May, the industry stepped up its exposure in the US after a deal was struck between the British Bottle Company and US-based Vine Street Imports to distribute wines from four English producers – Digby Fine English, Hush Heath Estate, Bolney Wine Estate and Camel Valley, in nine states in the US. This made it the largest portfolio of English wines available in any market outside of the UK, the company said at the time.
