New on Wine List Confidential: Padella

Padella – Wine List Confidential Score: 84.4

Step out of London Bridge Tube pretty much any lunch or dinner time and it’s hard to miss the long line of hopping-hungry, salivating Italophiles queuing outside Padella.

The pasta bar, launched by Tim Siadatan and Jordan Frieda of Trullo, has taken this little gastronomic pocket of London (next to Borough Market) by storm with its simple, consistently delicious, freshly made pasta served with simple sauces.

All of the wines on the main list are from tap (eight of them) and include a lovely aromatic Bacchus from Kingscote in Sussex (£5 for 125ml), nice with a simple dish of tagliarini with Chiarentana olive oil and Parmesan, and a texbook Sangiovese from family producer Vini Stocco in Friuli (£4 for 125ml).

On the blackboard at the time of writing were three hard-to-resist fine wine options: Serafini & Vidotto Rosso dell’Abazia 2009 (Mmm…), Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 2011 (Ooh…) and a Guiseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabaja 2008 (Aah – I expire!).

These wines change regularly so there’s always going to be something special to get your tongue around – assuming you can get a seat.
