Caballo Loco launches latest edition

The 16th edition of Chilean wine Caballo Loco has been released to mark over 20 years of the brand being on the market.

The updated wine is composed using the solera system, which sees 50% of the 2011 vintage blend combined with a mix of all previous editions.

The blend uses different grape varieties and different vineyard locations each year. Its backbone in the early editions was Cabernet Sauvignon, but grapes completing the blend have included Carmenere from Apalta, Syrah from Limari, and Carignan from old vines in the Maule Valley.

The wine has been aged in bottle for two years before being released.

Caballo Loco, which means “Crazy Horse”, claims to be the first ultra premium wine to come out of Chile.

Four vineyard locations are used to source the grapes: Ovalle in the Limari Valley, the most northern site with a strong maritime influence and low annual rainfall; Alto Jahuel in the Maipo Cordillera Valley, located in the foothills of the Andes and renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon grapes; Apalta in the Colchagua Valley, with an extended ripening season suited to growing Carmenere, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon; and Sagrada Familia in the Curico Valley, which develops Malbec and Merlot.
