Travel retail recovery continues
Alcohol sales in travel retail have reached their highest level since 1999.
Latest figures from The IWSR highlight the recovery in the market, showing how global wine and spirits sales in the travel retail market reached 25.4 million cases in 2010, the highest level since intra-EU duty free sales were abolished in 1999.
The IWSR Duty Free/Travel Retail Summary Report 2011 shows that global volumes rose by 10.4% in 2010.
Spirits volumes grew by 13.5%, while wine sales increased by 3.7%. The Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific all recorded double-digit rises in travel retail wines and spirits sales last year, while growth in the more mature European market was slower at 5.9%.
The fastest-growing categories of the travel retail wines and spirits market included US whiskey, Cognac and Tequila, all of which saw volume increases of more than 20%.
The top 20 suppliers continued to increase their share of global volumes; they now hold 71.5% of the market, compared with 69.7% in 2009.
Leading supplier Diageo accounts for 17.7% of wines and spirits sales, compared with 16.9% for second-placed Pernod Ricard.
