Bordeaux Index sets up HK wine school

Fine wine merchant Bordeaux Index has set up a wine school with bespoke tasting classes, to be run out of its Hong Kong offices.

The “Grands Crus Tasting” was the first event at the school and featured six different French wine regions with wines from each.

The wines were a mixture of older vintages and premier and grand crus from both well-known estates and small but “highly sought-after” wineries.

The lessons will be conducted in either English or Mandarin and led by fine wine educator, Anastasia Mak. Furthermore, Bordeaux Index claimed that their school is the only one run by a UK merchant that offers classes in Mandarin.

The courses are said to reflect the company’s “informal and unstuffy approach”, prospective students will be quizzed on their experience, knowledge and interests before starting a course best suited to their requirements.

“Given the outstanding success of our London classes run by the renowned expert Michael Schuster, we’re sure Hong Kong’s fine wine lovers are in for a treat,” said managing director, Gary Boom.

“They’re primarily for people who are developing a taste for good quality wine but don’t really know much about the wine they’re drinking.

“The emphasis will be on creating a unique and refreshing approach, with Anastasia taking you through a variety of themes. You’ll learn about the main wine regions of France and what makes a grandiose wine. You’ll develop an understanding of the specificities of French terroris and the hierarchy of French wines and, most importantly of all, we’ll give you the names you should look-out for.

“For the uninitiated, reading a French wine label can be daunting – but it is an important talent to have. One of the take-away skills students will leave with is a knowledge of the basic points they need to look for.”
