Asda sales feed job growth

Boosted by sales growth, Asda will create more than 7,500 new jobs in the UK next year despite admitting to a “particularly tough start to the year”.

The Walmart-owned supermarket said that its new initiatives such as Asda Price Guarantee, Chosen By You and the revamp of its premium range Extra Special have all contributed to the positive results.

Like-for-like sales for the supermarket grew by 1.3% in the third quarter (up to 30 September) and on the same day, Walmart announced it will create more than 7,500 new jobs in 2011 through a combination of opening new stores, the continued expansion of its home shopping service, and its acquisition and conversion of Netto stores.

Asda currently has nearly 3,000 vacancies available today.

Andy Clarke, Asda’s CEO said: "After a particularly tough start to the year we’re pleased with the progress we’re making.

“The new initiatives we have put in place [such as] Asda Price Guarantee, Chosen By You launch and the Extra Special revamp are all increasing the number of customers coming through our doors,” added Clarke.

Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart International, commented: "We’re encouraged by the recent sales momentum in the UK.”

Over the past five years Asda has increased its sales by more than a third from around £15 billion a year to approximately £20bn, creating more than 30,000 jobs across the UK in the process.
