Adnams launches distillery

English brewer Adnams officially opened a new distillery last week, which enables the brewer to produce its own vodka, gin and whisky.

The refurbished Copper House on the brewery site in Southwold, UK, is already turning out five products available for purchase, with whisky due to follow once it has undergone three years maturation in cask.

Hot water created as a by-product of the distilling process will be used to wash casks in the main brewery. Other distillation waste will be converted by the Adnams anaerobic digestion plant into renewable gas that can be used to power its beer and spirit production.

Adnams chairman Jonathan Adnams OBE said: “Hand crafted spirits are the next exciting step in our journey and we are proud to add distilling to our expertise.

“Small scale distillation produces spirits of a quality and character that far surpass mass-produced products. The addition of a small distillery to breweries is not uncommon in mainland Europe, but I believe we are the first brewery in the UK to brew beer and distil spirits on the same premises.”

Adnams business interests currently include five hotels, 70 pubs, 10 Adnams Cellar & Kitchen stores as well as an online store.
