Sake course for sommeliers returns for second year

With the availability of sake in the UK on the up, the Sake Sommelier Association has created two new courses to explore the tastes and history of the third “great ferment”.

Endorsed by the Sake Service Institute of Japan, the initial one-day  “Navigator Course” covers the basics of sake production and tasting, as well as sake and food matching and is essential before progressing to the “Sake Sommelier Course”.
The latter course is an in-depth, two-day affair building on the experience of the Navigator course and includes advanced tasting techniques, professional regarding purchasing, storage and serving and tastings designed to understand Umami (the fifth taste).
Master Sommelier Gerard Bertrand, who took part in the inaugural course alongside other on-trade professionals and amateurs from all over Europe, is one of a number of people within the trade to have commented positively on the scheme.
Courses are held at the Royal Institute of British Architects, 66 Portland Place and prices are £195 for the Navigator Course and £295 for the Sake Sommelier Course.
The next Navigator course starts on Monday 18 October and the Sake Sommelier Course immediately afterwards on the same day, finishing on Tuesday 19th.
