Nicolas Potel proves persistent
Britain’s fine wine merchants have hailed the quality of the latest Burgundies from Nicolas Potel’s new négociant business, Maison Roche de Bellene, based at his domaine.
Potel parted company with Cottin Fréres Nicolas last year, owners of Maison Nicolas Potel, but the majority of the growers with whom he worked have followed him to this new project.
"Life hasn’t been particularly easy for Nicolas Potel,” said Johnny Goedhuis. “His business relationship with Labouré-Roi came to an end in 2008 and I was concerned that the quality of his wines might suffer.
“Would he be able to maintain the critical relationships with his growers?” he continued.
However, Goedhuis confirmed, “Having tasted his recent wines, my fears were completely groundless. A number of his wines are outstanding and the overall quality is better than ever.
“It shows that the growers must have huge respect for him and his ability as a wine maker.”
Potel has launched the Collection Bellenum, a range of wines from the 1959 vintage onwards that he has tasted and selected.
He is also working on a small range of Pinot Noirs being made in the Bio-Bio Valley in Chile, from the 2010 harvest.
Cottin Fréres acquired fellow Burgundy trader-producer, Maison Nicolas Potel, through its subsidiary, Labouré-Roi in October 2003.
