Domecq defied Down under

Swiss group Hess seals deal with Peter Lehmann

WE COULD hardly go through this month’s news analysis without mentioning Allied Domecq’s failure to snap up Australian winery, Peter Lehmann Wines (PLW).

The global spirit, wine and quickservice estaurant giant had built up a 14.5% stake in PLW over two years but its offer of over £60m for the winery was never endorsed by founder Peter Lehmann.

Allied did put a brave face on the ignominious episode when presenting its full year results, however.  When asked about the situation, Allied chief executive, Philip Bowman said that Allied is now "looking at all options" in Australia – including launching its own wine brand – and it is clear to drinks ndustry watchers that the group remains interested in getting a foothold Down Under.

There was better news, however, in the form of the full year financial results that show Allied posting a better than expected 3% rise in pre-tax profits to £495m on sales of £3.4bn.

At PLW, too, there was an upbeat feel as the Swiss group Hess, sealed the deal on the winery. Robert Edwards, commercial director at PLW told The Drinks Business that the Hess acquisition was welcomed: "Unfortunately for Allied, they never showed the same aspirations for PLW to go forward.

Overall it’s a big company philosophy versus a small family company philosophy."  BACARDI is to launch the fourth instalment of its successful "Latin Quarter" advertising drive this autumn.

The £10m campaign featuring Vinnie Jones and, more recently, Hollywood actress Claudia Aros, will air on main terrestrial and satellite channels until the end of December and is entitled "Quick Pour".

Following on from the previous "Strong Arm" ad, Vinnie and Claudia race against each other to make the perfect Bacardi and coke.
