Overall objective of role

The role of a Spirits Advisor is first and foremost to advise and assist customers, both on the shop floor and via telephone enquiries. Customer service is always top priority, and takes precedence over any other tasks. The Whisky Exchange has built its reputation on offering an exceptional shopping experience. Our retail staff are the cornerstone of this. As such, every aspect of a Spirits Advisor’s manner and behaviour should build trust with customers and create welcoming, amiable retail environment. This also includes activities designed to promote the best interests of the shop, such as developing a customer base and advertising the shop and its services.   The role holder must be able to adjust to a broad and fluid set of tasks as requirements change in this progressive and innovative organisation.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Customer Service

  • greeting customers with a smile as they enter
  • answering the telephone, taking messages if necessary or transferring calls
  • making recommendations and guiding the customer in their decision
  • offering samples of products available to taste
  • ordering in stock if an items is available on our website but not in-store.

General Upkeep

  • maintaining shop standards of cleanliness, tidiness and presentation
  • notifying a manager of any faulty or damaged equipment
  • notifying manager of stock or sundries shortages
  • following daily open and close checklists.


  • processing sales, handling cash and card transactions and issuing correct change
  • managing change levels in the till drawers, and informing a manager if more is required.

Team Work

  • communicating news and information between other members of the team
  • working with other staff members to complete tasks in a quick and efficient manner.

Stock Control

  • receiving stock deliveries
  • replenishing stock from the storeroom and storage cupboards
  • informing a manager of any discrepancies between physical stock and ePOS
  • notifying a manager of any urgent stock requirements or sudden demand
  • stock rotation for BBE dated products.

Tastings & Events

  • processing enquiries for private tastings
  • assisting with the set-up and breakdown of private and monthly events.

POS & Merchandising

  • ensuring that price labels are correct and up-to-date, and creating new ones when necessary
  • keeping VM displays clear and tidy.

Product Knowledge

  • continued development of product knowledge of existing product range, as well as keeping track of new releases.


Key skills and knowledge:


  • Strong customer focus, always portraying a professional image when dealing with both customers and internal staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and colleagues.
  • Pro-active ‘can do’ attitude.  Self-starter.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Accuracy and good attention to detail.
  • High degree of flexibility is essential in this role.
  • Will require a good sense of humour!



  • spirits, drinks background or knowledge of the drinks industry would be advantageous.
