We are looking for an experienced Category Manager/Senior Buyer to run our Spirits Buying team and oversee our Grande Marque Champagne and composite items (beers, ciders and soft drinks) purchasing. The ideal candidate will have 5-10+ years of direct spirits-buying experience, established relationships with the key brand owners and European brokers and a proven ability to deliver a market-leading portfolio which combines rapidly-evolving premium new products with well-priced commercial ranges. The ability to think and plan strategically to influence and develop our spirits portfolio is essential, along with the passion and skills to lead and inspire a team.

The role reports to the Buying, Marketing & Retail Director and currently has three roles reporting into it; one Buyer and two Buying Administrators.

 

Duties & responsibilities

Manage the spirits, GM Champagne and composite sourcing process to achieve best-in-market pricing in all areas:

  • Overall responsibility for spirits, composite and GM Champagne pricing, ensuring the best possible terms are achieved across the range for all channels and ensuring appropriate contracts are in place where desirable
  • Work with brand owners and European brokers to ensure market-leading pricing on all spirits
  • Manage the purchasing timetable to maximise the impact of market promotions
  • Meet with suppliers regularly to discuss and manage range development and commercial terms
  • Oversee and control all price movements on spirits, champagnes and composite lines
  • Provide regular reports to the Leadership team relating to pricing movements and all issues related to procurement strategy and developments
  • Responsible for achievement of budgeted margin targets and ensuring all budgets are managed to agreed levels for all buying related costs.
  • Lead the development of the Enotria&Coe portfolio, ensuring it supports the requirements of the Company’s multi-channel strategy
  • Co-ordinate monthly price list updates and content and ensure its delivery in required format to agreed deadlines
  • Drive clear communications with the rest of the business
  • Work with the Supply Chain Director to implement a drive a robust S&OP process
  • Accountable for ensuring product data is accurate and up-to-date in our systems

 

Work with the sales teams and training teams to ensure they have correct information, particularly with regards to major tenders and customers:

  • Support the sales team with pricing requirements and requests
  • Source one-off (case in/case out) products at the specific request of customers.
  • Buy in stock deals for promotions
  • Develop collaborative relationships across the wider salesforce and maximise opportunities to develop knowledge, interface and understanding of the Enotria&Coe customer base across all channels

 

Team Management and Development

  • Ensure that clear communication processes are maintained across the Spirits Buying team
  • Responsible for developing the capability and structure of the Spirits Buying team to meet the ongoing objectives of the business and its multi-channel strategy
  • Conduct regular team appraisals, setting individual and team objectives in line with overall department and business targets and objectives, providing support as necessary to team members in the achievement of these objectives and ensuring that development plans are instigated and progressed as required
  • Allocate and manage workload across the team
  • Provide training for new starters and perform inductions where necessary
  • Escalate any performance issues rapidly and sensitively
  • Work with the HR department to recruit for new positions
  • Be responsible for cascading information to line reports
  • Be a role model for the Company values and challenge team members who are not

 

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  5. Strong negotiation and influencing skills
  6. Ability to maintain relationships with existing suppliers and source new suppliers for future products
  7. Ability to attend Trade Fairs and promotional events
  8. Ability to assess spirits on a qualitative, commercial and marketability basis
  9. A good working knowledge of Champagne, soft drinks, beers and ciders would be very beneficial
