Business Development Manager – Retail – London & South of England

Established in 2009 Speciality Brands operates in the premium spirits sector. We are a brand building distribution business that hold exclusive UK agency agreements and represent some of the finest award winning premium spirits brands including Nikka Japanese whisky, Diplomatico Rum, Cocchi vermouth and Michter’s Bourbon.

As with our products which are of the highest quality, our customers are also at the pinnacle of their respective sectors. Those that we work closely with include The Savoy, Claridges, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Waitrose.

In this highly dynamic and competitive sector building strong customer relationships is key and as such only the very highest level of customer service is acceptable.

Overview of Role

The specialist independent off trade channel is becoming increasingly important to Speciality Brands as consumers increasingly search to discover new experiences and expand their category understanding. This combined with the trend for more at home consumption has driven the need to focus more resource against this channel.

The BDM role has overall responsibility for an established independent specialist retail customer base of c100 accounts in London and the South of England. There will be an element of prospecting and opening new business.

The primary responsibilities of the role are to increase distribution, drive turnover, develop trade and consumer awareness for our brands and be the face of our business within the channel.

The territory the role covers is large and as such there will be a requirement for the successful candidate to travel frequently with occasional nights away and some weekend working. The account base covers Central London but also the Midlands, the South West (Cornwall, Devon), the South Coast (Brighton, Bournemouth) and Kent.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver against monthly and annual revenue targets.
  • Develop distribution and rate of sale for portfolio within existing off-trade customers.
  • Visit existing customer base on a 12 week call cycle – minimum 4 calls per year to each customer (80%).
  • Prospect and develop new customers for the business (20% of role).
  • Engage customers with staff education and training across portfolio.
  • Communicate with customers to ensure that they are up to date with all developments on the portfolio, promotions and general business.
  • Organise and deliver consumer tasting events, liaising with the Brand Ambassador team where appropriate.
  • Implement and manage monthly promotional programmes across all existing customers.
  • Liaise with credit control team to ensure that no customer pose an undue credit risk to the business.
  • Provide a monthly activity report to Head of Off Trade on key achievements and challenges.
  • Attend bi-monthly sales meetings

From time to time execute any other reasonable additional duties required. Due to business requirements, it is expected that the role holder will need to have a degree of flexibility in order to meet the demands of the role. It may be occasionally necessary to work out of normal working hours due to the nature of the business. The role holder must be able to adjust to a broad and fluid set of tasks as requirements change in this progressive company.

  • Experience of working with MS Office – Word, Excel, Power point.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of sales experience in the drinks industry.
  • Preferable experience of independent specialist off-trade channel.
  • Full, clean UK driving license.
  • WSET desirable though not essential.
