Live snake drowned to make wine in China

A disturbing video of a snake being drowned in a bottle of rice wine to make a traditional medicinal drink in China has emerged.

The footage shows two people dropping a large snake into a glass bottle sealing it inside, with the snake’s last moments clearly visible. The two-minute video has been viewed more than 340 million times since it appeared on qq.com, one of the largest news website in China, earlier this month.

Part of a practice which dates back to 771BC, after the snake has drowned its body is left in the alcohol to infuse to make a medicinal drink known as snake wine. It’s widely believed that the drink has medicinal properties and promotes vitality and health, as well as increasing fertility in women and improve virility in men, with Korean dictator Kim Jong-un known to be a fan. So precious is the drink, which is only available in Asia that two Chinese air passengers downed an entire bottle of it after they were stopped by security at Baiyun International Airport in Guangzho and told they were only allowed to take 100ml on board. Both passengers immediately started drinking the wine and managed to finish the entire bottle within a matter of minutes.

In 2013 db reported that a Chinese woman had to receive hospital treatment after a snake preserved in the same way jumped out of the bottle and bit her hand.
