Pub robber uses Del Boy trick to steal £35,000 gems

A rucksack containing £35,000 worth of gems was taken from a pub in Notting Hill, London, thanks in part to one of the robber’s using a distraction likened to Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses.

The victim was an antiques dealer enjoying a quiet drink with friends after work on 20 August, when one thief caused an opportune distraction for his friend to grab the loot by falling through a gate at the Earl of Lonsdale pub in Notting Hill.

The bag held around 60 items of antique European jewellery including rings, necklaces, brooches and bracelets dating from the 1820s to the 1980s.

One pub regular said of the elaborate scam at the pub in Westbourne Grove: “I’ve never heard of anyone doing anything as brazen as this. Watching the film back it’s like the scene when Del Boy falls through the bar hatch.”
