Fish drinks beer from boat

29th April, 2016 by Lauren Eads

Bringing new truth to the phrase ‘drinking like a fish’, watch the extraordinary moment a fish literally gets battered as it gulps down beer from a boat.

Giving new truth to the phrase ‘drinking like a fish’, the incredible moment was captured by a group of anglers in Brazil, with the video posted to YouTube by Cleber Moura.

Using its fin to prop up against the boat, the fish is seen holding its mouth upward in apparent anticipation before gulping down the best part of a can of Skol. The thirsty fish only returns to the water after taking some 20 swigs.

The phrase ‘drinking like a fish’ is a common saying to describe excessive alcohol consumption, However this incident appears to give added credibility to the saying, and it seems that alcohol can have a similar impact on fish as on humans.

In 2014 a group of researchers found that when drunk fish are able to double their speed, with inebriated fish more likely to take leadership over their sober fellow fish.

The team in New York gave ethanol to a zebrafish and found that when drunk fish become hyperactive, swim faster and exhibit aggressive behaviour which elevates them to the status of leader. Too much alcohol, however, will lessen their speed – much like a human.
