Summary
" The beverage industry lost confidence due to lack of external trade stimulus

" Mediocre weather did not support positive development for beverages

" Marginal increase in carbonates consumption supported by a high level of marketing support for the leading brands and price promotions

Synopsis
The second quarter of 2015 was characterised by lower levels of industry confidence in an environment of geopolitical uncertainty in the Eurozone. Disappointing weather also failed to stimulate beverage sales, with overall consumption in Germany shrinking by nearly 1% compared to Q2-14. Of the major soft drinks categories, carbonates posted a slight increase buoyed by a high level of marketing support for the leading brands and price promotions. The key story of Q2-15, however, was the on-going discounter price wars, with Aldi s and Lidl s price cuts on Red Bull emulated by other discount and non-discount retailers, putting category value under strong pressure.
