Exploring the bond between red wines and terroir in Centre-Loire

Discover the red wines of the Centre-Loire, made with Pinot Noir and Gamay, which display their terroir’s purest expression. Join Patrick Schmitt MW and Rupert Millar for a dynamic exploration of these under-the-radar wines on Monday 11th November 2019 at 3PM.

Wine professionals looking for terroir expression, authenticity and outstanding wine quality should explore the vineyards of the Centre-Loire. The region includes eight appellations: alongside the iconic Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are Menetou-Salon, Quincy, Reuilly, Coteaux du Giennois, Châteaumeillant and Pouilly-sur-Loire.

All denominations have their own personality and terroir typicity, and with its chalk, clay, limestone, Kimmeridgian marl and flint soils, the region offers extensive diversity. However, not all appellations produce red wines. Accounting for 13% of the vineyard surface, red wines are terroir-specific, mostly single varietal Pinot Noir, and sometimes blended, while some are made with Gamay. High quality and offering incredibly good value for money, Centre-Loire reds are must-have on a (or restaurants’) restaurant’s by-the-glass wine lists.

The seminar will be co-hosted by Patrick Schmitt MW, editor-in-chief of the drinks business and leading UK wine personality, and Rupert Millar, fine wine editor of the drinks business. The seminar will be built on their extensive knowledge of French and Centre-Loire wines and anecdotes from trips to the region.
