Aldi releases Chardonnay that helps remove ocean plastic

The budget supermarket has teamed up with The Hidden Sea to launch a sustainable Chardonnay, helping tackle the ocean plastic crisis.

Aldi has introduced the Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay, created in collaboration with sustainability-focused wine brand The Hidden Sea. For each bottle sold, the equivalent of 10 plastic bottles worth of waste will be removed from the ocean.

The Hidden Sea works with its global ocean health partner, ReSea Project, to fund large-scale clean-up efforts. This initiative aligns with Aldi’s commitment to offering more sustainable choices to its customers.

At £7.49 per bottle, Aldi’s new own-label Chardonnay makes it the first UK supermarket to collaborate with The Hidden Sea. This partnership highlights the retailer’s ambition to lead the way in combining affordable products with eco-friendly practices.

Liz Fox, national sustainability director at Aldi UK, explained the motivation behind the launch: “We know our customers want to shop more sustainably, which is why we’re pleased to be launching this unique wine that will support ongoing industry action to reduce ocean plastic. Our Buying Teams are always looking for ways to offer more sustainable options, and we’re proud to be the first supermarket working with The Hidden Sea on our very own label Chardonnay.”

The Hidden Sea co-founder, Justin Moran, emphasised the significance of the initiative, stating: “We are excited to collaborate with Aldi on this initiative, helping its customers champion ocean conservation by choosing our Chardonnay. Each bottle purchased will play a crucial role in funding clean-up projects that remove plastic waste from our oceans, helping to restore marine ecosystems.”

Moran added: “It will be a great achievement to see the wine in stores nationwide. We’re proud that Aldi customers can join us on this mission for a healthier planet.”

A Sustainable Choice for Shoppers

This new wine exemplifies a growing trend in the drinks industry, where brands are tying quality products to sustainability efforts. With the Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay, Aldi is making it easy for consumers to support ocean conservation while enjoying a glass of wine.

The Chardonnay is available now in Aldi stores nationwide.
