Paul John doubles Indian whisky production
Goa-based spirits producer John Distilleries has doubled production of its single malt whisky Paul John to 3 million litres, its master distiller has revealed.
Paul John has expanded the production capacity at its Goa-based site from 1.5m to 3m litres of alcohol annually, the company’s master distiller Michael D’Souza told The Spirits Business.
John Distilleries invested around INR1 billion in the expansion, according to reporting by The Economic Times of India.
D’Souza also said the company’s main focus over the next three years will be to increase the number of barrels it has for ageing whisky.
“Currently, we have 40,000 barrels. Our target is to reach 75 to 80,000 barrels. That would be the plan for the Goa operation,” he said.
John Distilleries also plans to expand its footprint in India with a new distillery somewhere in the south of the country.
He explained: “Post-2030, if everything goes well, we would have a new distillery somewhere in the southern part of India. That is our plan as of now and hopefully it should work.”
The spirits maker recently announced it would be stepping up exports and exploring newer global markets for its Paul John Single Malt.
The spirits maker exports to over 50 countries. According to industry estimates, in 2023-24, John Distilleries exported close to 30,000 cases of Paul John Single Malt whisky, to countries including the US, France, UAE and Japan. In the domestic market, the spirits maker sold around 72,000 cases of Paul John.
The spirits maker, which has distilleries across 12 locations with an overall production of 24 million cases annually, is now firming up plans to roll out premium rums and vodka.
