Cup of coffee costs more than a pint of beer in most capital cities
A cup of coffee in the capital city of most countries is more expensive than a pint of beer, according to a new study.
The research, conducted by comparison business Finder, spanned 163 capital cities from all over the world and revealed that in over half of capital cities (51%) there was a disparity in coffee prices and the cost of a pint.
The study, which includes an interactive map to compare the average prices, showed that in Krakow, Poland a cappuccino will cost approximately £3.50, while a pint of beer costs just over £3. In Lisbon, Portugal, it’s even cheaper, with pints of beer costing just £2.22 on average, compared to £2.76 for a cappuccino.
The findings showed that in the US, Brits would need to shell out 20% more for coffee with an average price of £4.42, while in Italy a cup of coffee could cost just £1.49 on average – 80% cheaper than the UK average of £3.47.
The most expensive cup of coffee around the world can be found in Copenhagen, Denmark, where a cappuccino will cost £5.01 on average. However, to find the cheapest cup of coffee in the world, Brits will have to travel all the way to Antananarivo, Madagascar where they will be rewarded with coffees that cost the equivalent of just 81p (124% less than the UK).
Speaking about the research data, Finder’s travel finance expert Louise Bastock said: “As Brits jet off to their favourite holiday destinations, they might be pleasantly surprised by the coffee prices in countries like Italy and Spain. However, savvy travellers should look beyond a well-priced cappuccino to maximise their holiday budgets.”
Bastock added: “Remember, whether you’re sipping an espresso in Rome or an americano in New York, choosing the right financial products can help you make the most of your travel money and avoid any unwelcome surprises on your statement when you return home.”
