Sensi premieres video for Brunello Officium Poggio Scudieri

Sensi Vini has released a video that tells the story of Poggio Scudieri, the area where its new expression of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG originates from.

The 54 second video begins by explaining that Poggio Scudieri is an “ancient land cloaked in vineyards and adorned by the Abbey of Sant’Antimo”.

It then explains that in 871 AD, Charlemagne, returning from Rome with his troops, stopped on the hillock in front of the abbey. There, they drank from a spring and treated themselves with medicinal plants cultivated by the resident Benedictine monks.

The name ‘Poggio Scudieri’, loosely-translated to ‘squire hill’, is a reference to the pilgrims, merchants and soldiers who stopped there en route along the Via Francigena.

And today, more than a millennium later, Sensi has included in its production Brunello Officium, from this historic site. ‘Officium’, a Latin term that can mean ‘service’ or ‘ceremony’, was chosen as a tribute to the duty and loyalty of the squires who gave the site its name. The label depicts the tower of the abbey (in gold, both as a reference to the colouration of medieval art and to the sunlight glinting on armour), and the roots symbolise the connection between the land and its people.

As for what’s inside – Sangiovese Grosso was cultivated on soil rich in fossils, marl and limestone, giving it a unique character that is distinct to this terroir. After fermentation in steel vats, there was 20 day maceration with continuous pumping over and rack and return in order to maximise the extraction of tannins and aroma. There then followed a 36 month period of ageing in large casks and then over a year in cement and steel tanks, and then at least a further four months in the bottle.

The final result is a wine with a garnet-red hue, aromas of berries, small red fruits, black pepper, juniper, liquorice, flowers and humus. On the palate it has freshness, polished tannins and a long balsamic finish. It is best paired with braised red meat and game, or aged cheeses.

The winery production also includes the Rosso di Montalcino Officium that will be launched soon.

These wines, along with the rest of the winery’s production, will be presented at Prowein 2023 (Hall 16 – Stand G75 ) and Vinitaly 2023 (Hall 9 – Stand C5 )
