Champagne Bollinger releases recently disgorged 2008 vintage

Bollinger RD 2008, a Champagne blended using grapes from 18 Grands and Premier Crus and produced only in exceptional vintages, will be released into the UK market on 14 March for £350 a bottle.

Bollinger announces special 2008 vintage low dosage release

Officially launched today in Paris, Bollinger RD 2008 is a blend of 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay. The new Champagne has been created using grapes from 18 Grand and Premier Crus predominantly from Ay, Verzenay, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant.

Also of note is the wine’s low dosage of 3 grams/litre. The liquid underwent disgorgement less than a year prior to release, bringing freshness to a blend first bottled 13 years ago.

Former head of the Champagne Maison Madame Bollinger first launched a recently disgorged old vintage in 1952, with the dosage of an extra-brut. It was the first time a Champagne brand had put a disgorgement date on its label, a practice that has become commonplace today.

Each RD release since 1952 has been paired with food. The Maison has decided to match the 2008 vintage with the Piedmont hazelnut, grown by Emanuele Canaparo on his terroir in Langhe, Italy — an IGP protected product. Champagne Bollinger will also work with Italian chef Gian Piero Vivalda to unveil the Champagne and hazelnut pairing.

Charles-Armand de Belenet, managing director of Champagne Bollinger, said of the new release: “Madame Bollinger always made it her mission to preserve the exceptional flavour and quality of her wines, which are the result of generations of experience and constant innovation. RD is the embodiment of this ambition and, loyal to her vision, each new vintage the Maison releases brings its own new tasting experience for lovers of great wines. The contrast between the freshness of the wine and the hazelnut’s generous flavour profile means that Bollinger R.D. 2008 is able to fully express its aromas and reveal itself in all its splendour. ”

Bollinger RD 2008 will be available at the Bollinger Burlington Bar, Bordeaux Index, Berry Brothers & Rudd, Amathus and Lea & Sandeman from 14 March, with an RRP of £350/bottle.
