Glenfiddich teams up with Temperley family for cider brandy finished whisky

William Grant & Sons has launched the fifth expression of its Glenfiddich Experimental Series, a single malt finished in Somerset Pomona Cider Brandy casks.

The collaboration, named The Orchard Experiment, sees the drinks giant working with the founders and owners of The Somerset Cider Brandy Company the Temperley family, to create a pioneering single malt.

The variant has been created using select Glenfiddich liquid that had matured in American Oak while held in Glenfiddich’s Experimental Warehouse and was then finished for approximately four months in sweet Somerset Pomona Spirit Casks.

Speaking to db, Matilda Temperley, managing director of The Somerset Cider Brandy Company said: “The Glenfiddich Orchard Experiment brings together two centuries old spirits – Scotch whisky and Somerset Pomona – to produce a ground-breaking drink that is a marriage of Somerset and Scotland.”

The Temperley farm in Somerset, UK, has been pressing cider for over 200 years and in 1989, inspired by its maverick spirit, the family’s pioneering approach led them to secure the UK’s first ever full cider-distilling licence and they have been producing Somerset Cider Brandy ever since.

Describing the collaboration, Temperley explained: “It is all about provenance and terroir and brings together the best of Scotland and Somerset in a beautifully crafted and sustainable spirit.”

Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich’s malt master, added: “Over the past few years we have had the opportunity to explore new sources for casks and I was intrigued by the possibility of using Somerset Pomona Spirit Casks to enhance and elevate the core Glenfiddich character of apples and pears. Working with the Temperleys has been great fun as they share the same core values so common in family business. I am delighted with the end result and I think we have created a beautiful expression of Glenfiddich that is true to our DNA with just a hint of autumnal Somerset sunsets – truly an Orchard Experiment.”

Bottles of the newly-created Glenfiddich Orchard Experiment are set to retail at £43 per 43% ABV bottle of whisky.
