Could avocado be the new summer cocktail flavour?

Avocado toast has claimed its rightful place in the Millennial hall of fame alongside hipster beards and vape pens.

But could the obsession with this creamy green fruit have gone too far?

Dustin Franke and Luca Simon, a pair of self-professed mixologists from Berlin, have come up with a new cocktail recipe which puts the avocado centre stage.

Enter the Guacamolita. Made in collaboration with the World Avocado Organisation, this cocktail is a fresh take on the classic margarita.

Co-creator Dustin Franke stands by the choice of ingredients. He said of the new cocktail: “Avocados bring a unique richness to a cocktail, without making it too heavy, because of their smooth texture and subtle flavour. An avocado cocktail may seem a little unusual but if done right, you can use it to create beautiful drinks, from the punchy to the more delicate.”

The Guacamolita

Ingredients:

5cl white tequila (optional)
3cl lime juice
2cl sugar syrup
1/4 avocado
3 stems of coriander
8 drops of Tabasco sauce
1 pinch of salt
Ice cubes

Preparation:

Using a slice of lime, wet the rim of the serving glass and roll the rim of the glass in salt.

Cut open the avocado, mash up one quarter until smooth then combine it with the coriander and tequila in a cocktail shaker. Next add sugar syrup, Tabasco, lime juice and ice and shake vigorously.

Fill the glass with fresh ice and pour the cocktail through a strainer.

Garnish with a sprig of coriander, a slice of lime and a slice of avocado.

Flanke and business partner Johann Lautenschlager own a number of bars in Germany’s capital city. Luca Simon heads up one such bar, Lamm, in the Prenzlauer Berg district of East Berlin.

Videos on TikTok showing how to mix jam and sparkling water or hard seltzers to create cocktails have started to go viral. Read more on that here.
