Spring in several French wine regions has begun with a severe frost, leading wine estates to use candles during the night to combat the chilly conditions.

And on Instagram, vineyards are sharing pictures of their own battle against the frost across Europe, using the hashtag ‘frostwatch’. Here are some of the images.

Temperatures plummeted to as low as -5°C in regions including Burgundy, Chablis and Bordeaux, as winemakers lit candles and burned bales of straw in a bid to protect their vineyards from the severe frost.

Winemakers fear the impact the frost could have on shoots, with Laurent Pinson telling Reuters that the entire harvest is at stake over a few nights. It is currently too early to properly assess the damage.
