Homesick ex-pat moves entire boozer to Germany

A homesick ex-pat has moved an entire pub in east Yorkshire, glassware and all, 600 miles to Germany.

British expat Paul Moss has lived in Germany for 25 years, but feeling homesick, decided to recreate a traditional English pub in his near his current residence in Iserlohn, near Dortmund.

The New Crown Hotel in Bridlington, east Yorkshire, was being gutted in October 2019 and turned into flats, and the pub’s fittings were being sold on as part of the development. This is when Moss took the plunge and decided to build his own boozer in Germany.

He told the Sun: ‘Bars over here are modern and clean cut. I missed the atmosphere of an English pub. But there could be no half measures. ‘We took everything — even dirty glasses. Now we’re almost there. The last thing will be the old front doors.’

Locals in Bridlington helped load the contents of the venue, which included the frontage, into a lorry before it was transported to the Rhur Valley.

Moss’ mission has been far from easy. He’s had to contend with two lockdowns, fire restrictions and a flood, but hopes to start welcoming punters in after Germany’s lockdown is lifted, reports the Bridlington Free Press.

Germany’s partial lockdown went into effect on 2 November, shuttering bars, restaurants and theaters while keeping schools open. Shops also can stay open, but with capacity restrictions in place.

On Wednesday, German Health Minister Jens Spahn told CNBC it is still “too early to say” whether the country will extend the lockdown beyond November.
