22 premier cru sites in Pouilly-Fuissé approved
The 10 year wait for the granting of premier cru status to vineyards in Pouilly-Fuissé is finally at an end, with 22 climats now officially recognised and classified as such.
The Institut National de l’Origine et de la Qualité (INAO) has approved 22 sites covering 194 hectares (24% of the total surface area of the Pouilly-Fuissé AOC) across the communes of Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson.
The 22 premier cru sites are: Au Vignerais, Aux Chailloux, Aux Bouthières, Aux Quarts, En France, En Servy, La Frérie, La Maréchaude, Le Clos de Monsieur Noly, Le Clos Reyssier, Les Chevrières, Le Clos, Le Clos de Solutré, Les Brulés, Les Crays, Les Ménétrières, Les Perrières, Les Reisses, Les Vignes Blanches, Pouilly, Sur La Roche et Vers Cras.
The petition was launched by the management body of the Pouilly-Fuissé AOC back in 2010 and the work has been on-going with the INAO ever since; with each site’s reputation, usage and characteristics being examined and studied down to the tiniest of details.
Although the decree is now awaiting the official sign-off of the French Minster of Agriculture, even if that happens in 2021, those producers with vines in the 22 new premier crus will be able to label their wines as such from this 2020 vintage.
