Glenfarclas unveils sapphire-encrusted 63-year-old Scotch

Speyside distiller Glenfarclas has completed its Pagoda Reserve Series with the unveiling of the 63-Year-Old Pagoda Sapphire Reserve, priced at £23,783.

The whisky, which is packaged in Glencairn crystal decanters adorned with real sapphires, is the third and final ultra-premium whisky in the series.

It follows the launch of the 62-year-old Glenfarclas Pagoda Ruby Reserve in March.

The sapphire bottling is available in two different editions. The first is the ‘limited edition silver’, which comes in two formats: 700ml bottles priced at £23,783 ex VAT of which a total of 180 bottles have been produced, and 63 1.5-litre magnums, priced at £50,964 ex VAT.

The second edition is the ‘collector’s edition gold’ which features just 45 1.5-litre magnums of the whisky, priced at £56,060.

The solid silver- and gold-plated collars of the two editions are individually numbered with a unique design.

The decanters themselves were made from hand-blown 30% lead crystal, with the front age statement on each vessel embedded with 36 sapphires to form the number 63. A total of 11,000 dark blue matching sapphires were ordered for the project.

The decanter design features Chinese guardian lions, engraved and infilled with a dark blue colour to match the sapphires and the blue crystal pagoda-shaped stopper.

The Pagoda Reserve Series draws inspiration from the pagoda-style kiln or Doig Ventilator created by architect Charles Doig in the 19th century. The pagoda kiln was designed to improve the efficiency of the chimneys at drawing off peat smoke.

Glenfarclas decommissioned its pagoda kiln in 1972, and the Pagoda Reserve Series has been named in its honour.

Scott Davidson, Glencairn’s new product development director, commented: “We are incredibly proud of our work on the Glenfarclas Pagoda Series and believe we have delivered some of our finest and most exceptional crystal cut decanters to date.

“It has been an absolute joy to work on this project as it has given us the chance to incorporate valuable gemstones into our decanters for the first time. Each and every decanter created is a truly unique work of art to honour the quality of the whisky inside.”
