Bordeaux 2019: Pricing pattern continues with Haut-Brion
First growth Château Haut-Brion and sister estate La Mission Haut-Brion have released to rave reviews, but with prices down on the 2018 price by 30.9% and 28.6% respectively.
As reported by Liv-ex, Haut Brion 2019 was released at €282 per bottle ex-negociant, a reduction of 30.9% on the opening price of €408 for the 2018 vintage.
The 2019 wine from the Pessac-Léognan estate is being offered to the international trade at £3,540 per 12×75, down 27.8% on the 2018 release of £4,900 per case.
It achieved praise from Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW and James Suckling, who both scored it highly. Perrotti-Brown gave it 97-99+ points, stating that it was “one of the most finely structured, tightly knit wines of the vintage”. With age, she said it had the potential to go “atomic” and to ultimately “take top place for the vintage”.
Suckling gave it 99-100 points praising its “great, tight fruit” and stating that it had “great length, going on and on for minutes”. Liv-ex said that based on the release, a score of 96 points would make the wine “fair value”, according to its market evaluation.
Fellow Clarence Dillon-owned estate La Mission Haut-Brion also released today, priced at €180 per bottle ex-négociant, down 28.6% on the 2018 release price (€252), according to Liv-ex.
The wine received potential 100-point scores from both Perrotti-Brown and Suckling.
It is being offered at £2,256 per 12×75, a reduction of 24.8% from the 2018 release of £3,000 a case. Suckling gave it 99-100 points, stating that it reminded him of some of the great classics produced by the estate, such as the 1955. Perrotti-Brown, who scored it 98-100 points, said the wine was “both decadently flamboyant and proactively graceful”.
Liv-ex said that a score of 96.5 from Neal Martin would make the wine fair value. Both 2019 wines from Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion are noted as having an ABV of 14.5%.
La Mission Haut-Brion’s second wine, La Chapelle de la Mission, was also released today priced at €42 per bottle ex-negociant, down 30% on the 2018 figure of €60, as reported by Liv-ex. It is being offered at £525 per case, down 27% on the 2018 price of £720, and achieved 92-94 points from Perrotti-Brown and 94-95 points from Suckling.
Finally, Saint-Emilion’s Château Quintus, also owned by Clarence Dillon, made an appearance. Released at €67 per bottle ex-négociant, down 30.2% on the 2018 release figure of €96, it is priced at the same as the 2014 vintage, according to Liv-ex. Achieving 96-97 points from Suckling and 94 points from Jean Marc-Quarin, the wine is being offered at £825 per 12×75, a 28.2% decrease from the 2018 release of £1,150 a case.
