Man registers beer as emotional support animal
A Brooklyn resident has registered a pint of beer as an emotional support animal with the USA Service Dog Registration in order to be able to drink on public transport.
As reported by the New York Post, 47-year-old Floyd Hayes made the bizarre move last month in a bid to be able to use the certification to enjoy a pint during his commute.
Hayes registered a pint of beer as his emotional support dog on the USA Service Dog Registration website, explaining that the beer would help with his social anxiety disorder.
“I travel from upstate to Brooklyn a lot, and on the bus they say it’s a federal crime to smoke or have an alcoholic beverage unless by prior written contest, and I always wondered where you get that consent,” Hayes told the New York Post.
The creative director from England is curious if his cunning plan will work.
“It was really just an experiment. I’m not trying to make light on anybody who has any emotional issues. I don’t mean it in a heady mental health manner. More if you go to a party and want to break the ice,” he said.
It is looking unlikely that Hayes will be granted his wish. “He can register his beer all day long, it’s not going to get him anywhere,” a USA Service Dog Registration employee told the paper. Use of an emotional support animal on transit requires medical approval.
