Blue wine pioneers release ‘unicorn tears’ rosé

Just when you thought wine trends couldn’t get any stranger, blue wine pioneer Gik Live has launched an iridescent pink rosé allegedly made “with unicorn tears”.

Called Unicorn Tears, the pastel pink wine “with a fruity candy aroma” has been designed with Instagram in mind.

The wine gets its vivid pink colour from “organic pigments” and boasts particles that make it sparkle. Gik is selling the wine online, charging £43 for three bottles.

Gik Live claims that the 12% ABV wine has already attracted “thousands” of followers and “hundreds” of likes on Instagram.

The Spanish wine brand took inspiration from Starbucks’s popular unicorn frapuccino, which launched last year and took social media by storm.

Gik Live claims the princess pink wine will help you become “the centre of attention at parties”.

While designed to be a bit of fun, the wine has already sparked criticism among industry traditionalists, with one detractor dubbing it a “drink for faggots”.

“It shocks us, because we wanted to do just the opposite: bring positivity and celebrate diversity”, a Gik Live spokesperson said.

Gik is no stranger to controversy. It caused a storm in a wine glass in 2015 with the launch of the world’s first commercially available blue wine, made in Spain.

The brainchild of a group of university students based near Bilbao, Gik Blue gets it colour from anthocyanins (a natural pigment found in red grape skins) and indigo carmine colourants.

“We wanted to create something new and change the wine industy,” Gik Blue co-founder Aritz Lopez told db.
