Drunk man accidentally buys a peacock, giant salamander and pig

A man fell foul to a spot of overzealous online shopping on China’s Singles Day – a Black Friday frenzy for single shoppers – waking from a drunken stupor to discover he had accidentally purchased a live pig, peacock and giant salamander.

A giant salamander

The unidentified man’s unfortunate purchases were shared on Weibo by the user Puzhexu on Monday, and gained nearly 10,000 likes and comments, as well as more than 14,000 reposts on the platform.

  • As reported by the South China Morning Post, the post, written in Chinese, read: “In the early hours of yesterday morning, when I was drunk, I clicked on Taobao and started shopping … All along I thought I had only bought two sets of clothes,” the man wrote.

“I suddenly remembered to look up the delivery date of my clothes, and realised I had also bought a pig and a peacock.”

A later post from the man claims he also accidentally bought a live giant salamander on JD.com, another Chinese e-commerce platform similar to Taobao.

The man attached screenshots of the “extremely adorable Thai mini pig” which cost him 278 yuan ($40), the live blue peacock that came up to 390 yuan (about $56), and the giant salamander that cost 288 yuan (about $41).

Singles’ Day is a 24-hour annual shopping event, similar to Black Friday in the US, created by e-commerce giant Alibaba 10 years ago as a counter to Valentine’s Day.
