Trend for washing hair in Champagne hits Instagram

A beauty blogger is encouraging her followers to wash their hair in Champagne, claiming that it helps to “tame frizz” and gives “an extra little vamp of shine” to long locks.

Instagrammer Madina Shrienzada pouring Champagne on her hair

Instagrammer Madina Shrienzada shared a video in which she rinses her hair with a bottle of Champagne – a terrible waste if you ask us – but which she says offered noticeable results.

Filming a step-by-step tutorial for her 290,000 followers, Madina sections off her hair before dousing it with a bottle of Champagne and leaving it to dry, before cutting to a snap of her shiny new do.

Shrienzada is known for her weird and wonderful beauty hacks, and previously claimed that potato peelings could help reduce the appearance of bags under your eyes.

Summarising the hack, Shrienzada gave the trick an “8/10” and described it as “a fun little” activity for a girls’ night.

Some followers bought into the idea, with one responding to the post by asking: “I don’t know champagne in my country… is there is any way except champagne will give me the same result?”

Would Prosecco, for example, result in a more budget bouffant? However others were quick to criticise the stunt, calling her out for encouraging the expensive treatment.

One critic wrote: “Next thing you know you’ll have a video telling girls to pour Coca-Cola in their hair, and these poor girls are going to do it. You really should make yourself better informed if you want to make a difference to women, tell them whats right not what you think might be. This is harmful to other women who don’t know any better.”

While the benefits of Champagne on hairstyling remain, to be fair, scientifically untested, Shrienzada isn’t the first blogger to suggest that alcohol could be a worthwhile beauty aid.

In 2014, Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson told Yours Magazine that she regularly douses her hair beer to “keep it shiny”, a trick passed down from her mum. The old-fashioned hair treatment apparently works by leaving a residue of hops and barley from the beer in hair as it dries giving it a coating which is supposed to give hair more body and weight.

While in 2016, celebrity hair stylist John Blaine launched a new hair care range including a shampoo, conditioner and hydro serum infused with red grape extract, which he said would leave your hair “healthier, softer and richer in colour”.
