Last ex-cellar consignment of Jayer to go on sale in Geneva

The last bottles of Henri Jayer’s wines left in the domaine cellar are to go on sale in Geneva later this month, having been consigned to auction by the family.

Taking place in the Swiss city on 17 June and held by Baghera Wine Auctions, the sale will feature just over 1,000 bottles and magnums from the famed Burgundian estate, which is one of the most sought-after and collectible labels in the fine wine world.

The bottles are part of the stocks kept back by the Jayer family spanning the vintages 1970 to 2001 – Henri Jayer’s last vintage before his death in 2006.

Split across 215 lots, the sale includes wines from various premiers and grands crus in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Richebourg and Echézeaux, including: ‘Beaumonts’, Les Brûlées’, ‘Les Meurgers’ and, of course, ‘Cros Parantoux’.

In total, 469 bottles and magnums of Cros Parantoux covering 1978 to 2001 have been consigned to the sale, as well as nine bottles and magnums of Richebourg (1973-1987), 42 bottles and magnums of Vosne-Romanée ‘Les Brûlées’ (1973-1987) and 187 bottles and magnums of Echézeaux (1976-1999).

Two verticals have been collated for the sale: a 15-magnum vertical of Cros Parantoux from 1978-2001 (CHF280,000-480,000) and a 12-bottle vertical of Echézeaux 1976-1999 (CHF40,000-80,000).

Lying catalogued but unlabelled in the domaine cellar, all of the bottles were labelled and given a capsule by Jayer’s daughters and his nephew, Emmanuel Rouget, who took over the estate in 2001.

The wines have been given fresh wooden cases, specially produced for the occasion and each bottle has been fitted with a ProofTag in order to identify it.

Michael Ganne, Baghera Wines’ executive director, said: “Henri Jayer will always be one of the most mythical winemaker from Burgundy and these last bottles originating from the Domaine cellar’s really is an unprecedented event for all wine enthusiasts – the very last chance to touch and taste the Holy Grail! I greatly admire Monsieur Jayer and it is a real chance and a great privilege for our team to conduct this sale which we prepared with his family.

“With this pre-eminent auction, which promises to be an historical event, Baghera Wines further consolidates its position as a leading auction house offering the finest wines to worldwide connoisseurs.”
