Sotheby’s to offer ‘Peter Blake’ Macallan

Following two record breaking appearances recently, now Sotheby’s is to offer a bottle of 60 year old 1926 The Macallan with a label by Peter Blake.

The auction house is to offer the whisky as part of its fine wine and spirits sale in New York this autumn, with an estimated price of US$500,000-$700,000.

The estimated price is the highest estimate the house has ever placed on a single bottle of wine or whisky.

The price is warranted however. Only 12 bottles of the 1926 The Macallan with the Peter Blake label were ever bottled and another 12 with a label by Italian futurist artist Valerio Adami.

They also very rarely appear for sale or at auction although several have now gone on sale this year and each time have broken records with consummate ease.

To begin with a pair of the whiskies appeared at Le Clos in Dubai this April where they were sold for $600,000 apiece, while just last week another pair were sold by Bonhams in Hong Kong with the bottle with the Peter Blake label making $1 million and then the one with the Adami label $1.1m – both world records.

Interest in rare whisky is soaring worldwide and Sotheby’s itself has reported that sales by value of just The Macallan rose 4,000% last year.
