Adidas releases £160 beer-repellent shoes

German sports brand Adidas has released a pair of limited-edition, beer-proof shoes to shield feet from overflowing steins (and other, more unsavoury liquids) at the annual Oktoberfest.

Made in Germany, the home of the annual beer festival, the München shoes are inspired by the traditional lederhosen worn at the event and feature a full grain leather upper, leather lining and embroidery.

The design of the leather foot lining is in keeping with the traditional red and white checked Oktoberfest-style shirts, while ‘Prost’ is emblazoned in gold on the side of each shoe.

The shoes are also water-repellent, guarding wearers against the almost inevitable beer spills.

In a promotional video, it is stated that the shoes are made from the “finest leather with DPBR coating,” DPBR allegedly standing for ‘durable puke and beer repellent’.

In a statement, the brand added: “Adidas Originals has thought of every obstacle. To withstand the rigors of the ‘Oktoberfest,’ the shoe will come with a water-repellent – and most importantly, a beer-repellent – treatment. With this ‘Oktoberfesterisation’ the sneaker will survive every beer shower”.

Held in Munich, the original Oktoberfest attracts around 6 million people each year. It remains to be seen whether the term DPBR, or indeed beer-resistant shoes, will catch on in the shoe industry.

The shoes are available on the Adidas website for £159.95.
