DBG Italia breaks away from Berry Bros

DBG Italia, David Berry Green’s Italian wine agency, is to become an independent business from Berry Bros. & Rudd.

Since launching in 2015, DBG Italia has traded through specialist importer and distributor Fields Morris and Verdin, which is owned by BBR.

From 1 April DBG Italia will be fully owned and directed by David Berry Green and the company will begin the independent distribution of its wines.

“The support I received from Berry Bros. & Rudd during my first 18 months as a business owner has been instrumental to the success of DBG Italia,” Berry Green said.

“I’ve built up some strong relationships during my years in Italy and the time has come to spread my wings and promote my ‘family’ of world-class Italian wine producers to a broader market,” he added.

Berry Bros will continue to source a selection of its Italian wine range from DBG Italia, while Berry Green will supply other customers within the UK and abroad.

“David worked for the family business for over twenty years. His buying responsibilities saw him sourcing wine from Burgundy, Spain, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand among others, but it was the wines from Italy that really captured his imagination,” Berry Bros’ chief executive Dan said.

“There is little doubt that the portfolio of producers he looks after is unparalleled and we look forward to continuing to work very closely with him,” he added.

DBG Italia is a business to business, ex-cellar service that exports hand-picked classic Italian fine wine around the world to local importers and distributors.

Operating from Barolo since 2009, DBG Italia focuses on the Nebbiolo wines of the Langhe in Piedmont, while also offering fine wines from across the Italian peninsula taking in Tuscany, Lombardy, the Veneto, Calabria, Sicily, Sardinia and Puglia.

Berry Green’s independent distribution business puts him in direct competition with Fields Morris and Verdin.

Other key distributors of Italian wine in the UK include Armit, Vini Italiani, Vinissimo, Winetraders and Vinexus.
