HK sales of AOC Burgundy soar

Revenue of Burgundy wine grew by 9% in 2016 reaching a new record of €43 million with sales of red and white AOCs the Hong Kong top sellers, reflecting a diversifying and “democratic” market, according to the BIVB.

Ahead of the annual Bourgogne Week which is on in Hong Kong now, the BIVB has released the latest report for the Hong Kong market using figures from 2016.

Hong Kong is now Burgundy’s fifth biggest market in terms of revenue and the 13th largest in terms of volume.  Burgundy exports accounted for 1.147 million bottles, up by 16% from 2015 for a total revenue of  €43 million and an increase of 9%.

The Fragrant Harbour is still a traditional red wine market as sales increased 27.2% by volume and 10.5% in terms of revenue while white wine was up 5.7% by volume and 4.9% in terms of revenue.

However, as a sign of the times and changing consumer tastes, Régionale Bourgogne and Mâcon appellations saw volumes sales soar by 83% and 64.8% respectively, Chablis and Petit Chablis volumes rose by 8.8% while grand cru wines fell 6.5% by volume and 12.3% in terms of revenue – representing a more democratic market, said the BIVB.

This is reflected also in the sales of red Burgundy which accounted for 76% of total revenue at €37.6 million with Régionale Bourgogne red AOCs the top sellers, with 43% of exports and village and village premier cru appellations from the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits came second, with 33% of export volumes.

On-trade

In the restaurant sector, Burgundy wines had the highest number of references per point of sale (up 22 points in terms of number of references over 2015) and accounting for 15% of the offer in the 94 surveyed restaurants.

Chablis was the most widely distributed, being offered in 69% of restaurants, but closely followed by village, village premier cru and grand cru appellations from the Côte de Beaune.

Specialist retail

Out of 32 outlets surveyed, Burgundy was available in 93%, led by Chablis and the Côte de Beaune village, village premier cru and grand cru appellations which both came in at 87%, followed by the classifications from the Côte de Nuits at 80%.
