World’s ‘most expensive shot’ poured in HK

For a mere HK$68,000, a shot of Croizet Cognac’s ‘Cuvée ‘Leonie’ 1858 was sold to a Chinese buyer who used it to toast president-elect, Donald Trump at the InterContinental Hong Kong.

It was reportedly the tipple which Winston Churchill and General Dwight D. Eisenhower drank on the eve of D-Day, and its spin-off cocktail, ‘The Winston’ set the world record for most expensive cocktail sold at US$12,500 in 2013.

Now, Cognac Croizet Cuvée ‘Leonie’ 1858  is back in the headlines making another new Guinness World record for the most expensive shot ever poured which happened to occur on the same day as the US presidential election on 9 November.

The buyer, Jason Wong, who is chairman of Eyarn Lighting in Foshan City, Guangdong, bought the 40ml shot for HK$68,000 (US$8,765) and toasted the president-elect, Donald Trump.

“I’m very happy today to witness the opening of the bottle”, he said. “Today is also a special day as it’s the day of the US presidential election.

“Mr Donald Trump has just been elected to be the next President of the United States. I wish he will bring world peace and more business opportunities to the world.”

Wong then drank the shot and gave a thumbs up to the audience.

InterContinental is donating the money to AIDS Concern in Hong Kong, as well as offering further shots of the Cuvée ‘Leonie’ for HK$68,000 or HK$1,188,888 per 700 ml bottle.

The 155-year-old Cognac was made pre-Phylloxera and its vines are reported to have been planted by Caesar’s conquering armies in 55BC.

For anyone at a loss this weekend, the InterContinental is also selling ‘The Winston’ cocktail made with 60ml Croizet 1858 Cuvée ‘Leonie’ Cognac, 30ml Grand Marnier, 30ml Chartreuse V.E.P. and a dash of Angostura bitters for HK$108,000.
