Wine club 67 Pall Mall aims to add 1,000 members

London’s private members’ club for wine lovers, 67 Pall Mall, is to expand into a new floor, allowing up to 1,000 more people to join.

According to the club’s founder, Grant Ashton, 67 Pall Mall “has gained the necessary permissions to expand” within its grade II listed building, which is a former bank designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

In a letter sent to existing members by Ashton last week, he said that the club will grow into the first floor of the building, giving 67 Pall Mall the opportunity to add 103 seats, creating a “clubbier” feel, as well as ensuring that there is more space for members to enjoy the club on a non-bookable basis.

The new area will also contain a large bar with more than 500 wines by the glass, and users of the first floor space will have access the club’s full wine list, although the food upstairs will be a “simpler version of the à la carte menue.”

Ashton also stated that construction work on the expansion project would start in February next year during the night, so as not to disturb members during the day.

The added space will also allow 67 Pall Mall to increase its membership base, which was capped in May 2015 at 1,200 people.

Ashton explained in a letter to members, “In order to bring in the funds for the refurbishment, we intend to add 1,000 members to the club, but in doing so, we will ensure that we don’t compromise your ability to use the club at peak times. We are relatively quieter on Friday through to Monday; with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday being our peak days – as such, these new memberships will be offered as off-peak memberships only.”

However, such off-peak status, which allows new members to use the club only on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, will convert to full member status once the first floor expansion work is completed.

Ashton also said that he was “delighted to announce” that 67 Pall Mall has secured licensing for longer hours which will mean that from 3 October the club’s closing time will be 12.30pm, seven days a week.

Last food orders from the kitchen will be at 23.00, with the last order of alcohol at 23.30.

As previously reported by the drinks business, 67 Pall Mall, which is named after its St James’s address, is a private member’s club with over 5,000 wines by the bottle and 500 wines by the glass (via Coravin) all listed on iPads.

All wines are served in Zalto glasses, and a £20 corkage is applied to all wines not on the list, which are either brought into the club, or stored there by members: there is a three-case storage allowance for every member in the below-ground cellar for up to 32,000 bottles.
