Cointreau releases Cognac expression

French liqueur brand Cointreau has unveiled the latest addition to its stable, Cointreau Noir – a blend of orange liqueur and Fine Champagne Cognac Rémy Martin.

Its creation was driven by Cointreau’s Master Distiller of 30 years, Bernadette Langlais, and based on a spirit originally formulated by Édouard Cointreau called called Majestic.

Having re-discovered the recipe while exploring the company’s archives, Langlais decided to build upon the original recipe by macerating it with walnuts and almonds. It was Langlais’ choice to rename Majestic as Cointreau Noir – a reference to its dense, dark nature.

The expression will be unveiled for the first time by Alfred Cointreau, sixth generation of the family responsible for the spirit, later this week at Mr Fogg’s in Mayfair as part of London Cocktail Week.

He said: “The London cocktail scene has been gaining momentum over the last few years, with ever increasing standards and numbers of knowledgeable customers, the city presents an exciting and important part of the Cointreau story.”
