Korean union drops strike plan
The labour union at Pernod Ricard’s South Korean division have called off a planned strike after the company reinstated all employees destined for early retirement.
Kim Guee-hyun, the union leader, told Korea Times: “We had a meeting with the CEO during which he said he will create a new team tasked to develop a new market for Absolute Vodka. Those subject to the layoffs will work on the team.
“I’m very pleased to see the issue was settled peacefully.”
The French drinks giant is cutting jobs around the world in an effort to cut costs over the next three years.
A plan to make some 30 employees in South Korea take early retirement prompted a backlash from the union which said that this would have been the sixth round of early retirements in the Korean division since 2000, with 140 jobs cut between 2000 and 2006 and 2007 and 2013.
