Brewer reveals secret to not getting drunk

The co-founder of the Boston Beer Company has said there is a trick to drinking beer all night and not getting drunk.

Surprisingly the answer is not “drink less” – advisable as that is – but rather involves eating yeast.

Brewer Jim Koch recently told Esquire magazine that swallowing dry yeast mixed in with yoghurt before a night out stops him from getting too drunk.

He told the magazine “Active yeast. Like you get at the grocery store. One teaspoon per beer, right before you start drinking.”

An enzyme in the yeast, alcohol dehydrogenases, helps to break down the alcohol before it enters the bloodstream, mitigating if not outright eliminating the effects of drunkenness.

Koch did warn that the trick would not necessarily work for everyone and that the yeast does taste unpleasant.

So the best advice for avoiding drunkenness and a hangover remains drinking less.
