‘New California’ tasting to launch in London

UK wine merchant Roberson Wine has announced the launch of a new tasting event which will bring some of California’s “most exciting” winemakers to the capital for one day only.

The New California event will take place on 22 April and will feature a day of tastings, seminars and panel discussions on wines from the “New California”.

Attending the event will be Jon Bonné, wine editor at the San Franciso Chronicle and author of The New California Wine.

Mark Andrew, senior buyer at Roberson Wine, said: “For a long time California has been seen as the epicentre of ‘overdone’ wines’. Big wines got big scores, and the result was a deluge of wines that tasted the same and did little to excite us. Things began changing about five years ago, and slowly a group of winemakers emerged with a different agenda to join the cause of a handful of classic producers that had never bowed to fashion.

“Acidity and balance have been rediscovered, and cool climate sites in California are being celebrated for the elegance and balance they can provide. This new movement excited us so much that so we set off for California to investigate further and secure allocations of our favourites for the UK market. It proved to be one of the best buying trips imaginable.”

Winemakers confirmed to attend the event include Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman of Sandhi Wines, Domaine de la Côte; Jamie Kutch of Kutch Wines; Jasmine Hirsch of Hirsch Vineyards; Wells Guthrie of Copain Wines; Steve Matthiasson of Matthiasson Wines; Graham Tatomer of Tatomer Wines; Chris Brocway of Broc Cellars; and Ellie Patterson of Mount Eden.

Tasting seminars and panel discussions will take place throughout the day with the winemakers as well as journalists Jancis Robinson MW and Jamie Goode, covering topics such as “Balanced Chardonnay” and “Balanced Pinot Noir”.

Jon Bonné will also hold a tasting seminar on “New California Wine”, addressing the main themes contained in book.

The ‘New California’ event will be held on Tuesday, 22 April at the Kings Fund, Cavendish Square in London from 10 to 5.30pm, and is open to members of the trade and press.

An after party with the winemakers will be held that evening at an East London venue in association with London wine bar Sager & Wilde.
